When I talk to my dad and grandfather, I get the sense that the generation in which they grew up in had a little different stance on this idea. Getting a major in entrepreneurship was unheard of unless you dropped out of school in order to launch your own business. These days entrepreneurship has grown to be a popular major and minor in many major universities. I currently attend Belmont University which Entrepreneur magazine rank as being in the Top 10 Entrepreneurship majors in America. Since when did such a study such as this get popular in universities?

I find that the study of entrepreneurship is helping students perfect the art more than study a subject matter. When we’re in class studying finance, accounting, marketing, etc – It sometimes feels like you are trapped, at least for me it does. With entrepreneurship I am able to utilize all of the skills I’ve learned in the subjects I just mentioned and then I am able to apply them to my business model. For example, in a class I took last fall called Financial Entrepreneurship, we had a business model of our choice with a 3 year forecast projected. During this time we determined if the business would have success in the normal market. Of course there are a few factors you can’t take care of in a spreadsheet but for the most part it was a class that helped us understand the potential risk a company might be when introducing it to the world. We used accounting, finance, marketing, management, and even some common sense to accomplish these forecast plans.

This past year has been a busy year for me and my business partner Sam Dryden. We’ve been shooting videos, setting up marketing projects for music artist, building social networking sites, twittering, and loosing sleep. But the point I am making in this post is that we’re exposing oursleves to all of these different industries through all sorts of mediums. No matter what industry we find oursleves in the next few years, we’ve gained knowledge of how to use the skills we’ve been developing.
